Montenero is the name of a hill that stands at an altitude of 500 meters in Palermo province. Three red grape varieties are grown here, including the excellent Nero d'Avola which is greatly represented in this outstanding red wine. Character, personality and elegance are the main features of Montenero, which can be appreciated after a long storage period. Abbazia Santa Anastasia (where Abbazia stands for 'Abbey') was founded in 1100 by Conte Ruggero d'Altavilla and quickly became the cultural and working centre for the population of Madonie Mountains. When the City of Castelbuono was founded, in 1316, the monks left the Abbey and the surrounding lands. In 1980 the Engineer Francesco Lena decided to buy and reclaim these lands with the intention to create a perfect winery, where the harvest is manual, carried out during the freshest hours of the day, where the white wines are preserved sur lies in a fresh temperature and the great red wines are aged in French oak barriques.
