Hierà, the island of Vulcan so named in ancient Greece because it was sacred to Hephaestus. In the nineteenth century James Stevenson, a man of culture and great benefactor, also devoted himself to agriculture, planting the first vineyards. The eruption of the crater, which began on August 3, 1888, destroyed what the Scot had so lovingly and pioneeringly created. To the eye it is a beautiful deep ruby with hard-penetrating purple nail. Good texture with tight, heavy bows. The first nose is richly perfumed, excellent intensity with elegant notes starting with small red bramble fruits and broadening to a sweet spice of tobacco and cocoa fading into clay notes of dry soils. On the palate it is ample and velvety, enveloping the palate in a gritty caress of beautiful sweet tannin that gradually leaves the return of a rich flavor and good alcohol content of great harmony, manifesting all the sunshine that only an island like volcano can express.
